Company registration and tax filings in Pakistan: which portal applies?

A business may have separate incorporation, income tax and sales tax obligations. Start with the legal structure, activity and province before selecting a filing portal.

1. Choose the legal structure

A single-member company, private limited company, public company and limited liability partnership are different structures. SECP handles company incorporation and LLP registration. A sole proprietor or ordinary partnership should not be described as an SECP-incorporated company; its registration route depends on the structure and locality. Confirm ownership, proposed name, business activity, registered office and authorised signatories first.

2. SECP registration and continuing filings

SECP's eZfile route covers company name reservation and incorporation. After incorporation, statutory forms and updates may arise as directors, shareholding, registered office or other particulars change. The filing requirements vary by entity and transaction. Review the current SECP company registration guidance and LLP guidance.

3. FBR IRIS is a separate tax track

FBR registration and income tax returns are handled through IRIS. A company certificate alone does not complete a tax return. Depending on the taxpayer and activity, federal sales tax registration and returns may also be relevant. Gather prior returns, registration details, bank statements, invoices and expense records before filing. See FBR's income tax filing guidance.

4. Services tax depends on location and activity

Provincial sales tax on services can involve PRA (Punjab), SRB (Sindh), KPRA (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) or BRA (Balochistan). Islamabad Capital Territory has its own applicable services tax framework. Registration and returns should be assessed against the actual service, place of supply, exemptions and current rules; filing on every portal is not automatically required.

Documents to bring to a first review

  • CNIC or identity details of owners and directors
  • Proposed business name, activity and office address
  • Constitution and ownership details
  • Existing SECP, FBR or provincial registration numbers
  • Prior filings, notices, invoices and bank records
  • Locations where services are supplied
General information: Portal requirements and applicable taxes change. Confirm the current law, forms and deadlines for your specific entity and activity before filing.
